MIDSUMMER NIGHT
(IVAN KUPALA NIGHT)

/February, 21 - March 20/

"There are still people in some countries who will honour and celebrate this demon of Kupala on June 23... young men, women and lassies will gather in the evening, weave themselves wreaths and garlands of vile plants and lay them upon their heads and engirdle themselves. They also will kindle a fire at this demoniac celebration, leading ungodly circles round it, arms linked, skipping, singing songs the foul Kupala, leaping over the fire, then sacrifice themselves to the demon Kupala; and they will do other damnable deeds at these vile gatherings, of which be it even disgraceful to write".
